why are there only 4 downs in football? 5 is a much more widely accepted number.

Because, in general you really get 3. The forth is meant to be your chance to give up and hand over the ball far down the field, usually. You are given the option, if you choose, to actually use that down and try for something, and thus also risk coming up short and giving up the ball in a bad position.
Also, seriously, if you had 5 downs to get 10 yards, things would be ridiculous. Sure, you could still be stopped, but you don't have to go for much at all ever. 4 is sufficient for opportunity and pressure.
