sucks, at least it wasn't an iphone 5 or higher with the newest iOS, otherwise you'd be locked out of your phone right now and have to buy a new one. you'd be seeing error 53 on the screen at all times and when you take it to apple for a repair they'd confiscate it and say you need to buy a new one.

Error 53 explained by apple:

error 53 is all about security (more like financial securities), you see iPhone 5 and higher have a fingerprint scanner on the home button which record's your 'touch ID' to apple's server, a breach of the phone's encryption could cause a digital record of your finger prints to become public violating your security. In event that the phone cannot determine if the parts in the phone are the original parts, it will display error 53 delete all your files and other data and permanently lock you out. this is to insure that for your safety only apple certified technicians work on your phone and only supply real (costly) apple parts and repairs, as a fake part could be physically set-up to bypass the digital security and encryption set-up by apple. We at apple are sad to say there is no way to recover your files, phone numbers or other programs or contacts after this error is present on screen, and are also sad (giddy) to say that it's apple's policy that we will not repair the broken features of the phone and reset the error, because error 53 is there for your protection (from yourself), your only option is to buy a new iPhone. and the old one needs to be confiscated for the owner's security just in case the encryption has been compromised or will be compromised at a later stage.
