And it occurred to me that the premise of the show is the human will and human determination can overcome all obstacles, and likewise protect and save itself from both larger outside forces and from itself. In many ways, this is in line with many a tone of Liberal Modernism, which preaches the individual can do anything and is independent and self-sufficient in many ways, and likewise that "believing in yourself" means you will succeed.
Yet, as G.K. Chesterton pointed out, the Asylum is filled with men who "believe in themselves".

Gainax up to no good again, eh?
"Madmen" are simply people, who have understood ideas far beyond the scope of the ape-brain of the species on average. That's why Google X works so well. Instead of medicating the mad, the mad are given the tools to execute their ideas. Immense success follows - not more than not, but the successes alone are enough to far outdo the failures.

Re: I've now seen Gurren Lagann
Actually, that's somewhat accounted for by Chesterton. He notes that a lot of geniuses of certain fields of reason (mathematics, for instance) really do end up going mad, in that they really become detached from reality and start drawing connections between everything, including absurd things, and things made up in their own mind (think what happened to the guy "A Beautiful Mind" was based on). They really do run the danger of going insane.
He does also go into some detail though about how artists tend not to actually go insane in that way, and that logicians who dabble in various arts tend to stay more sane. As he puts it, the one is trying to fit the heavens into his head (which is impossible and only causes his head to burst) while the other is trying to poke his head into heaven and look around.
He also notes you can't really argue with an insane person based on reason, because their problem isn't lack of reason. If you question their theories about the conspiracy of the world being out for them based on reason alone, they will win, as they have been drilling reason in their minds against every setup for a long time and are many steps ahead of you. The only chance is to appeal to them on a different level by turning their theory on it's head (show it to be unappealing and meaningless to you, even if true).

And that's the reason why you should encourage unorthodox schools of thought rather than reason against them - for even one far-out theory becoming real can push the total value of a civilization's technological levels up by several levels.
Also, Gainax wasted a perfectly good plot in Episode 6.
