Post How to speed up your computer without adding hardware
These are some tips on how to speed up your computer. You'll be surprised how easy it is. Even if you're computer seems fast enough, there are some ways you can make it even faster. Even if you're using a modern computer, there might be things slowing it down and after done it might seem like you have a new computer.

Please remember this is for Windows computers. I'm not sure if this will work on a Linux system or a Macintosh, I'm pretty sure there's ways but I have no idea on those.

All these are assuming you're using a modern Windows operating system. (Windows 2k - Vista) Anything older or newer it probably wont work.

Step 1: Services and start up programs

The services running on your computer are the ones running all the time. Windows by default enables a lot of services that can severely affect system performance and system security at times. To get to the list of these services, click start and click run and type in "services.msc" and then hit enter. Disable anything that you're not using and that you know you dont need for Windows and your programs to function correctly. For example, I dont need the wireless service, my computer connects to the internet through a ethernet card. This is just wasting my memory.

Caution: Dont disable anything that you dont fully understand the function for. If you dont understand, look it up on the internet.

Even though this tutorials scope doesnt cover hardware mostly, it would be a good idea to check how much memory your computer has. Right click the my computer icon, where ever it is and click properties, the applet that pops up will tell you the windows OS and the amount of memory you have.
Below is the amount of memory your Windows OS needs to be perfectly happy and functional.

Windows 2k:
256 mb

Windows XP
512 mb

Windows Vista
1 GB

Though for all of these, the more the better. Memory is cheap, you should buy enough so you're computer doesnt have to hit the page file much.

Step 2: Hard disk space, Un-needed programs, the registry

Having all kinds of un-nessary stuff on your computers hard drive can mess with it sometimes. You should also use a program such as ccleaner once and awhile to comb the registry of enteries in the registry since Windows likes to check out stuff all the time. Empty registry keys or ones pointing to things that dont excist can waste CPU time and even make the system unstable if the registry file has been accumalating this stuff for awhile. Windows also likes to store all kinds of stuff in documents and settings (espeicly XP and Vista, they store a lot) You'll notice if you use a program to clear out this temp stuff it sometimes can make the system faster. Windows is sort of like a stinky wet dog, when there's a lot of stuff around it trips over itself.

Step 3: Updates to OS, devices, common software you should find alternitives for.

You really should update your OS, espeicly a Windows OS. Microsoft is constantly fixing up their mistakes in the code. Keeping your OS up to date will keep it running faster, sometimes MS will out do themselves and release a update that makes their OS more effeciant (SP3 made Windows XP very stable and fast)

If you're squimish about opening up Internet Explorer and using Windows updates, you can download the actual executables that have all the updates you need without waiting for Windows updates. Just download the files and double click. For example if you dont have service pack 3 for Windows XP, you can find the whole deal with a search on the internet, and save the service pack to a CD or thumb drive so you dont have to access the evil empire servers for awhile. Though if you're lazy you can always use windows updates and it'll hold your hand for awhile.

Note: Never use the updates to peripheals from the Windows Update sites, they often screw up. Get the drivers you need directly from the manufactures websites for your video card, chipset or what have you

Make sure you update your direct X and the drivers to your hardware, like your video card and sound (Espeicly if those are fairly new, sometimes hardware manufactures fuck up and fix it later on)

Software packages that severely fuck up the performance of your PC

Internet Explorer
Never use Internet Explorer. Not only it's badly coded and crashes often, it can severely compermise the security of your system. There are way better free altnernitives that work better anyways (Firefox is a good example). Though, even if you're not using Internet Explorer, make sure you update it to the latest release, since even if you're not using it, it's heavily integrated into your system and is constantly a security problem, espeicly if it's before 7.

MSN Messenger

MSN is a poorly coded POS. Not only does it make a lot of systems unstable, it opens all kinds of security holes on your system. You're better off using another free alnertive such as Pidgin or aMSN. These programs work better than MSN's chat client anyways and have certain features it doesnt have.

Step 4: Hardware related performance issues

Open up your PC and clear out any dust you see with compressed air. If possible, re-arrange any parts in the system so that air can ventalate around them. Do this even if you're PC doesnt have heat issues, since even if it's not overheating bad, if it's overheating at all it might act slow or programs might stop responding. If it's overheating really bad it might reboot, espeicly on a hot day.

If you're using any system Pentium 4 and up you're case should have fans on the top or on the sides to ventalate more air away. Espeicly if you have high end video cards that suck a lot of voltage or you have more than two hard drives in your PC. If it's an AMD CPU of any kind, always make sure you have proper ventalation in your system, even more than you need since these CPU's run hotter ussually.

Step 5: Priority set up and task manager
Open up your task manager (control+alt+delete). If the screen goes to options on whether to shut down or w/e, just click on the Task Manager tab. Go to processes.
You can end processes that you KNOW you don't need, this won't disable anything, just end it temporarily. Also, if you're using something that you want to go faster, find that program in your processes section, right click it and go to set priority. Pick Highest Priority. (Note: This will sometimes fuck your shit up, not permanent, but it may make everything really slow until you set it back to normal priority, so only do this if your computer is fast already.) This won't cause any permanent damage if it doesn't work, so experiment with that shit and see how it goes. Best if you only have one program running. :REESE

i edited in another step and stickied this.

good work. but you're still gay.
also, i've decided topics won't get stickied unless they're high priority shit (like myspace hacks and such).
