Basically something modern or very similar with some kind of underground resistance faction against whatever. Thinking RPG but any example would do.

First 3 games that came to my mind were mainly fps:
- Red Faction game series, where you're fighting on Mars against goverment exploating citzens to their limits, rezistance is created from rebelled workers (or rather slaves).
- Freedom Fighters. America taken by Russia, you start from some rebelled plumer to become rezistance leader so i can say there's a little of RPG touch to this.
- Operation Flashpoint, Resistance expansion has story where you're fighting russian ocupation on one small island (that's an quite old game or rather battleground simulator)

But i think that wasn't on your mind hehehe... (^_^)" hmm, i think that i don't remember any RPG game where any resistance movement as faction had the main role... meaby i will remember something later.

Oh God I loved Freedom fighters, such a fun fucking game. Not the longest or the deepest, but a tidy little shooter for sure.

I never played much in the way of fps, so those are new. Red Faction doesn't really fit though. Again, the focus was something modern. I'm just curious, since I think there's alot of potential in some kind of sci-fi spin-off of society in which such a group could exist, while still keeping that very close similarity to our reality. I'm surprised there's not alot done with it.

Needs a logical plot line. North Korea couldn't take on Somalian pirates, let alone conquer the entirety of East Asia.

Video game alternate universes often disregard logic and reality. Take, for example, Forkheads Solid. Or Freedom Fighters.

Yeah, but freedom fighters was much easier to suspend reality when playing, because fuck, it's the Soviet Union, the only nation that could have credibly posed a threat to the USA. North Korea doesn't pose a threat to anyone, other than pissing them off enough that they annihilate North Korea.

North Korea has no manufacturing power, severe food problems, a conscript army that is equipped with by now long defunct soviet tech, and hardly any naval or air force to speak of. Yeah, they might have 1 or 2 nukes (literally), but even if they hit South Korea or the USA with both of them, they would be squatted like the fly on the proverbial wall.

Not only that, but due to wide spread embargoes, and a mass persisting famine, there is no way for North Korea to industrialize enough to ever pose a threat to anyone.

Homefront, if I recall correctly, assume that because the USA withdraws from East Asia, North Korea easily supplants the other nations. Which is batshit fucking insane, because South Korea would wipe the floor with the north without American aid. Even if the North somehow beat them, they wouldn't have any naval capacity to attack anyone else. Certainly not before Japan panics like fuck and re-arms itself, and every country in South East Asia starts bandying together in panic.

tl;dr, Soviet Union was actually a threat in it's time, North Korea is more like a mild itch.

Final Fantasy 12 for the PS2 has a "Resistance vs Empire" theme but It is set in the crusader ages despite having some modern tech in there aswell. Also I would reccomend you not play the Enix FF games (10-2 onwards) as they suck balls.

Depends what you mean by modern. Do you mean set in a more or less modern setting (modernish technology and weaponry)?

Final Fantasy 7, Parasite Eve, Indigo Prophesy (Fahrenheit, outside the US), Heavy Rain, Kinda Mario RPG, though it's a very fantasy modern setting, Earthbound (Mother series)

Something based in largely our world at roughly the same point in time technology-based. Though that last one is subject to change. The main point is that it's at least 90% identical to our world at present. Or thereabouts.
