Microsoft/Yahoo deal.
Here are some articles pertaining to the finalizing of the Microsoft/Yahoo deal in case you didn't know about it before: http://news.idg.no/cw/art.cfm?id=CB3A2D ... FEBCC6FEAAhttp://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/20 ... nes-googlehttp://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid= ... rZYPZL.ZmIhttp://blogs.barrons.com/techtraderdail ... ith-yahoo/Basically, Yahoo's search engines will be powered by Bing from now on (a merge, if you will) in order to compete against Google. Yahoo will earn a percentage of profit from all of this, etc etc. I read in today's express papers that Microsoft thinks that they will do much better than Google because they have the second largest search engine on their side now, and that this will help break people's "force of habit" to rely on Google. I don't think Microsoft realizes that even merging with the "second largest search engine" will do much to deter people from Google. It's not because of "force of habit" that people are using Google - after all, Yahoo and Microsoft's search engines (well, the MSN search) have been around much longer than Google. Most, if not all, Google users are those who migrated from said search engines to Google because of its efficiency and just general awesomeness. I know people who are on Yahoo/MSN because it's a force of habit for them; they don't want change, so they stick with what they already know. So, what do you think? Has anyone actually used Bing? I did a few times, didn't like it much.

Re: Microsoft/Yahoo deal.
The reason I hate Yahoo is because it keeps trying to shove celebrity news and other advertisements down my throat when I don't want them...

Google is easy and efficient. The only real problem can come from the fact that there's porn in every search. BUT, you can put up safe search.
the other search engines are slightly less convenient than Google.

Re: Microsoft/Yahoo deal.
I havnt used Yahoo in years. Ever since I started using Google I never use it anymore, and I hate it because Yahoo sucks in general. I never even herd of Bing. Though since I now associate it with Microsoft I'm going to have to assume it sucks the big one. I hate Microsoft's MSN portal, the news stories on there are just as worse as Yahoo. Yahoo is probably going to get worse, though they'll be around longer with M$'s deep pockets lolz.

Yeah, that creeps me out. I wish there was a better alternative. Even though it is very creepy, it doesnt really make much difference.

Re: Microsoft/Yahoo deal.
I hate to sound dumb and ignorant, though why should I care? It's not like they send the IP's too. Companies like double click have been tracking surfing behavior for years (Of course if it bothers you enough you can make tweaks to your internet settings and get programs to block all those and prevent it)

psychokittyboy wrote: Yahoo... it isn't quite as good, but hell... worth not having my info sold. It's used fairly like polling to get more or less accurate marketing info to tell what works, what people are interested in, how much they can charge, etc. It just tells them how many people look for what stuff and click on what stuff, not who is doing it. In any case, I wouldn't surprised (in fact I'd expect it) if most the other search engines were doing the same thing. That's partially how they make money after all, but also a way to improve the engine itself (info on what people are usually actually looking for when they search for various things). But, to a greater extent, your internet provider has been doing the same thing on a greater scale for a longer time. One of my computer science professors used to work for some of these companies and write the various algorithms for their info gathering programs.

Re: Microsoft/Yahoo deal.
Your ISP is required by law to record all your activities online and keep them around for awhile. If the police have permission, they can get access to these. Though this is only if you're under investigation for a crime. However, you have less and less privacy on the internet as time goes by.

But the ISPs do it elsewhere anyway for their own various reasons.
