Post New Evolutionary Theory
[big]New Theory Emerges for Where Some Fish Became Four-Limbed Creatures[/big]

Quote:
A small fish crawling on stumpy limbs from a shrinking desert pond is an icon of can-do spirit, emblematic of a leading theory for the evolutionary transition between fish and amphibians. This theorized image of such a drastic adaptation to changing environmental conditions, however, may, itself, be evolving into a new picture.

University of Oregon scientist Gregory J. Retallack, professor of geological sciences, says that his discoveries at numerous sites in Maryland, New York and Pennsylvania suggests that "such a plucky hypothetical ancestor of ours probably could not have survived the overwhelming odds of perishing in a trek to another shrinking pond."

This scenario comes from the late Devonian, about 390 million years ago to roughly 360 million years ago. Paleontologist Alfred Romer, who died in 1973 after serving on the faculties at the University of Chicago and Harvard University, saw this time as a period of struggle and escape -- and important in fish-tetrapod transition -- to ensure survival.

Reporting in the May 2011 issue of the Journal of Geology, Retallack, who also is co-director of paleontological collections at the UO's Museum of Natural and Cultural History, argues for a very different explanation. He examined numerous buried soils in rocks yielding footprints and bones of early transitional fossils between fish and amphibians of Devonian and Carboniferous geological age. What he found raises a major challenge to Romer's theory.

"These transitional fossils were not associated with drying ponds or deserts, but consistently were found with humid woodland soils," he said. "Remains of drying ponds and desert soils also are known and are littered with fossil fish, but none of our distant ancestors. Judging from where their fossils were found, transitional forms between fish and amphibians lived in wooded floodplains. Our distant ancestors were not so much foolhardy, as opportunistic, taking advantage of floodplains and lakes choked with roots and logs for the first time in geological history."

Limbs proved handy for negotiating woody obstacles, and flexible necks allowed for feeding in shallow water, Retallack said. By this new woodland hypothesis, the limbs and necks, which distinguish salamanders from fish, did not arise from reckless adventure in deserts, but rather were nurtured by a newly evolved habitat of humid, wooded floodplains.

The findings, he said, dampen both the desert hypothesis of Romer and a newer inter-tidal theory put forth by Grzegorz Niedbwiedzki and colleagues at the University of Warsaw. In 2010, they published their discovery of eight-foot-long, 395-million-year-old tetrapods in ancient lagoonal mud in southeastern Poland, where Retallack also has been studying fossil soils with Polish colleague Marek Narkeiwicz.

"Ancient soils and sediments at sites for transitional fossils around the world are critical for understanding when and under what conditions fish first walked," Retallack said. "The Darwin fish of chrome adorning many car trunks represents a particular time and place in the long evolutionary history of life on earth." UO Academic Support Funds supported Retallack's research.

TLDR Version: A new explanation for how our fishy ancestors set foot on land emerges, and with some persuading evidence to think so too. Our ancestors evolved to walk on land due living in floodplains not in evaporating lakes.

On a side note, this explanation makes far more sense to me. It's hard to imagine a fish evolving in a fast evaporating lake.

CUE: Science changes its mind too often, it doesn't have all the answers! Creationism 2012!

Post Re: New Evolutionary Theory
Evolution. The fact evolution exists, means we exist.
(I am no Scientologist mind you)

Mankind has evolved a great deal. To the point where we downsized from being 8ft tall neanderthals with incredible strength to survive, to a smaller 6ft humans reliant on technology as a way to survive and live consistently on Earth.

There are various theories on mankind. I'm the complete opposite of "religious" but take the "God" from Christianity for example. The people that have faith in this religion believe that we were created by this so called "God." Yet "God" didn't create humans, humans created "God." From my perspective at least.

I find the way human beings perceive different things to be ultimately amazing.

Alright cloud's post is kinda not on point but whatever. Opinions opinions.

On topic I like the idea. I never thought flopping onto ground was true, but more a slow mutation of limbs in shallow water areas would lead to escaping prey by landing on ground accidentally. It became more common and eventually the concept of ground as haven became more plausible until fishier characteristics started dissapearing entirely. Woodlands makes sense to me, but it doesn't matter. No way they just flopped out and sprouted legs over time.

I'd agree to some extent. I mean, if so were the case evolution would have been much, much faster than it has been. However, it's a nice thought. In some way, humans are defying evolutionary laws and evolving on their own. It's incredibly interesting.

Well I think we're exploring knowledge. Eventually I bet we will be able to control evolution.

Post Re: New Evolutionary Theory
I'm actually amazed this didn't come up earlier. Of course genetic "evolution" is a fairly long-term process that spans slow modification on every generation so although the "necessity" is a required factor for it, the "rapidly evaporating lakes" wholesome context doesn't... "swim" very well. Unless it's a much slower evaporation than what it sounds to be.

As for Human evolution, this is quite an interesting one actually. by classical definition, evolution as a physical adaptation to the surrounding environment doesn't actually apply to humans. While "Evolution" in the form of scientific progress is going amazingly fast, knowledge is not genetic. In other words, the progress of science is not evolution per say because it doesn't actually leave any form of mark on the human genome and archetypes. Humans know more and are able to accomplish much more overall but their reliance on technology is increasing, tied with it. With appropriate technology, the "wise" man can do more, but without, it can do less. If the next day supermarket stopped existing, an atrociously high amount of people would be left with no real idea of how to even feed themselves from cultures, hunting or fishing. They wouldn't know shit about how to properly prepare meat or plants to avoid diseases.

Human "Evolution" presents a duality in which the knowledge of "refined" sciences to the specie as a whole ascends but the "common" knowledge as well as physical ability of the specie as individual dwindles. Quite simply, there is a physical and practical regression tied to human "evolution".

And this contradiction makes me laugh as I write this.

Kristina ._. Hot lesbian sex nao.

Personally I think, evolution can be defined as a vague term in context of the human condition. I tend to cringe at objective dictionary definitions. Our evolution of knowledge may not be changing us biologically, but it is helping us adapt to our environment. I could go on for a long time, but instead: *Insert Transhumanist propaganda here*

Dictionary wise there are some things we consider one way but I'd prefer it to be more general. On this however we need a different term. Advancement is too general.
