Post Retro Games
I've recently become (more) into Retro Game hunting and collecting. I found there is an interesting community of such people on youtube and elsewhere, and I kinda new there were collectors before and such. For a while i've been picking up old games I like here and there when I could find them for a good price, but today I decided to hit new thrift stores to actively look for such things. Kinda at a bad time, since I should be cutting back on spending right now, but granted I'm looking for stuff cheap.

I recently picked myself up a Dreamcast and some games at a flea market, at about market price for most of it, so no huge deal there (might have been a bit taken for the game prices, but whatever, nothing high). And Today I picked myself up Pirates for the PC (I play through wine on linux) which is a game i've been looking for, Warcraft III and the expansion Frozen Throne, and Genji: Dawn of the Samurai for the PS2. All these games were $1 each, so I made off pretty well.

I'm no where near as obsessed or as big a collector as most the guys I follow on youtube and such, and I hope I don't become that way (though tempting) because it would be a time and finacial drain from something that isn't in the end that important. But I find the history of games fascinating and I love old games and I figure some day I can pass it on to my kids or sell some of this stuff off again.

Right now, system wise my collection includes:
Atari 2600 (Heavy Sixer)
Atari 7800
NES (model 1)
Super Nintendo (model 1)
Sega Genesis (model 1)
N64
Dreamcast
Playstation 1, 2 (slim), 3 (fat)

Games for all, some more than others. I need to get more controllers for a few, particularly the Dreamcast.

It seems that in recent years it's been harder to find the cool deals. I think maybe more collectors have popped up, or just the passage of time has made things harder to get. I used to find good stuff at my local big thrift store, but now rarely do I find anything worth getting. Part of that is a reseller store opened up in the bazaar next door, so I think they go through and buy up most the good stuff from the thrift store early and re-sell it, which is a bummer because they aren't cutting any deals there.

Anyone else into retro games? Anyone else have some lying around or see them every once in a while?

I'm building a collection of DOS-based h-games on this site as we speak.

Also, I have a SNES.

Ever played Chrono Trigger?

Post Re: Retro Games
Chrono Trigger is one of the best, if not the best, RPGs ever made. I love that game. Rosie has it on the DS, and I've had it on playstation, but I'd love to get a hold of it on the SNES. That and Secret of Mana which I used to have but somehow lost. Others as well, but those are big ones.

I have a good bit of older computer games as well now, some DOS, some not. I really like Warcraft II (more than III really), but I can't find the expansion yet. Found out Rosie inherited a bunch of great older games from her brother that we hadn't seen (like Fallout 1, 2 and Tactics, Master of Orion 1 and 2, etc). Great stuff.

Mostly a port, but it included some extras and cut scenes (from the PS1 version) and an extra dungeon and ending (which linked Chrono Trigger to Chrono Cross kinda in a way that Radical Dreamers indicated).

Yep, that's where it comes from. Also, the artwork was done by the same guy or team that did DBZ.

I've seen some of the collection, haven't really played anything. Though I did see True Love there. I played that for a bit in college along with a couple friends. I remember a part where the friend's sister essentially throws herself at you, and I was there with my friend trying to get out of the situation but ever time I choose the option I thought would cut things off (like, no, I do not like you) the guy would add in words that would just make things worse. I narrowly escaped that at the end. I was not trying to go after a little girl, and really at the time I wasn't trying to go after much of anything, I just wanted to play a dating sim game, partially because I enjoyed the FH ones so much.

Say, that reminds me. You ever saw the newest sim date we released? It made a bit of a splash on the interbutts.

I saw that. But as I'm into neither my little pony nor plays at animal romance, I did not bother.

You'll like this, then. It's the neo-Fh era's greatest technical achievement until now.

Post Re: Retro Games
Man, I still rememebr when I got WarIII, by then I was already valuing my War1 CDs as priceless superior retro-games if I was told one day that WarIII would be considered retro, I would have laughed my ass off, conveniently ignoring the fact that it's bound to happen at some point as time moves on.

If this is beyond a collector whim and you actually really like vintage games, I would recommend La Mulana, both versions depending on your fancy. The original has been made to resemble the MSX era and mimics its chiptunes and graphics (down to mimicking the graphical limitations of the time such as sprites being unable to superpose correctly.) but being a puzzle-heavy game those and poor translation make it obtuse and head-banging at times. I personally enjoy the remake that's been made to resemble SNES graphics. Both incarnations of this game are metroidvania-style exploration games, with a lot of riddles and puzzle-solving. The setting is A La Indiana Jones.

La Mulana seems interesting. And I saw the new EVA, which was out there and twisted as usual, though I honestly don't care as much about the Eva stuff.

What I'd really like to get my hands on now is Secret of Mana. It was up on amazon for $31 a few weeks ago, but I decided to wait a day and think about it. Next day price jumped up to around $45. Still not terrible for the game, but at that point I'd kinda want to get the box too, which is much more expensive.
