Post Are Point A-B Video Games becoming Outdated?
Yeah, it's becoming hard to make Point A-B games anymore since in the 7th Generation, we're so used to realism that we don't want to just do what the game tells us.

The only reason why FPS games continue to do this style of game play is cause of the multiplayer. Once you beat the game, you still have the multiplayer (although, i played CoD4 a couple of times).

But slowly other games are getting out of this phase. Resident Evil gives you the ability to upgrade weapons, unlock new levels and new weapons, making the campaign exciting again because you have a WHOLE NEW way to play it. GTA provides a thousand side missions and the ability to just do w/e the fuck you want. and Ratchet and Clank is complete chaos with constant weapon upgrades, new armor, and challenge modes.

But i'm afraid that awesome games like Heavenly Sword and God of War are just outdated nowadays. They're worth renting, but not buying. you beat them, and that's it. yes, if you're the type who plays games more than once (even though they're exactly the same), you probably think differently, but I can't play the SAME thing again. I want variety.

Games to completely get rid of point A-B playing:
Heavy Rain (creators of Indigo Prophecy, looks fuckin' awesome, and seriously, anything you do determines the outcome of the story line... you can even have every character die and it just keeps on going. there's no "go back to check point" in this shit.)
Guitar Hero and Rock Band (cause, the missions don't actually matter, and the new style will no longer be linear, but options)
RPGs and MMORPGs (some still have the style, but in general, they separate from A-B playing as much as possible... Fallout 3 is a good example).

for the most part yes, but i think there will always be a place for old style platformers like castlevania. but nowadays people are getting tired of linear gameplay. games like GTA broke the mold really...

games with no replay value never do too good in the market, even if the gameplay is really good. Game Development/Design/Programming is a business i plan on going in to, and most of the ideas i have are extremely non-linear

Well, I would say the next Banjo game would be one that would kick ass and be a platformer...but I heard the majority of the game is in vehicles...fail :(

Meh, the new generation is unable to like any game that has any form of challenge whatsoever so GAMES as we loved and hated them may become out-dated before we realize it

The new generation is too spoiled by using the internet for everything, a couple of years ago, you had to beat the game(s) many times to get everything, so I say that A-B games will go down hill but wont be outdated

Post Re: Are Point A-B Video Games becoming Outdated?
The thing about games based upon getting from point A to point B is that those are all single player games. God invented the internet so kids these days wouldn't have to grow up on single player games. Take Left 4 Dead for example...it only has 3 game types, and single player is actually the last one on the list. Gamers don't want to play by themselves these days because frankly they don't have to anymore. You can't put on a headset and cuss out the god damn fucking terrorists who keep spawning behind on that roof, killing you in one shot because you're a badass playing on Veteran.

But yes, GTA is what really got the ball rolling on this as it gives the player what they truly want: absolute freedom. What's one of the things that some think is really gay in the videogame world? Invisible walls. The walls that won't let you walk through that door even though it's open, that won't let you climb into that dumpster even though it's open, and that won't let you shoot the merchant and take all your cash back. And there's a simple explanation for this: people play games to escape reality, but at the same time they want it to be as realistic as possible. God knows you "can't" just go outside, pull an M16 out of your trunk and do drive-bys all around town...chucking grenades out your window all the way down mainstreet. That's why you play GTA...so you can do this shit, hit that old lady with your lambo and watch her go flying. Get shit-faced drunk, hop on a motorcycle, rear-end someone full speed while on a bridge and go flying for 2K yards before falling 20 stories to the water below.....and survive (Achievement baby. :cool ).

In short: people use videogames to escape from reality so that they can do everything they can't do in actual reality. This is why GTA and free-roaming games like it have such appeal. You can do whatever the fuck you want with no consequences what so ever. In A to B games, there is no such freedom. You're playing from a script, your actions really don't have any true meaning as you're just filling in the role given to you with no room for creative fun.

i would love to see a free form exploration game with destructible scenery, that would be fucking amazingly awesome.

just walk around where ever, and have the ability to blow huge craters in the ground, or dig large tunnel systems, or whatever.

I loved Red Faction sir, loved it hard... in fact, I had sex with it and it fell asleep in my arms.

Going on 2 and a half days with no sleep now, plus the sweet embrace of my baby Mary Jane...I'm incapable of catching the reference made.

But Red Faction sucked...it was alright because it was new and you could blow shit up, but meh, I just didn't like it that much.
