Every Noise At Once
"This is an ongoing attempt at an algorithmically-generated, readability-adjusted scatter-plot of the musical genre-space, based on data tracked and analyzed for 1127 genres by The Echo Nest. The calibration is fuzzy, but in general down is more organic, up is more mechanical and electric; left is denser and more atmospheric, right is spikier and bouncier." http://furia.com/misc/genremaps/engenremap.html

Re: Every Noise At Once
Bsdm anal porn, to be exact.
But I think I could click randomly through this, Record my computer, And then remix it into something completely different.. would be a good learning excersize.

Re: Every Noise At Once
tuypo1 wrote: horray noname agrees with me It's all silly, really. I myself used to sit and think of all sorts of ridiculous subgenres: gore rap, harsh hop, gabbacore... well that last one actually might exist in some form, but it doesn't really matter unless there's a significant artist or two behind it. That's what turns an inside joke into a legit movement. To me a genre only qualifies as such if there's more than one person doing it. Also, "more" Canadian indie does not qualify as a separate genre, I mean come on man

Re: Every Noise At Once
Digging through this more; there's a lot of regional variants (stuff like irish vs. british versions of x-genre) which is fair depending on how notable those countries are. Like for me, I can tell the difference between Finnish and Norwegian black metal because they're both historically significant but interpreted the same idea in noticeably different ways. That being said, the difference between those two scenes isn't vast enough to call for a new, nationalized set of subgenres (which is rather ironic considering the abundant national socialist sentiment in black metal in general). I think these national divides make more sense for things like dance/garage subgenres, as some of them actually did come to define an irrefutably particular sound that would have an impact on wider genres outside their country of origin. I'm thinking UK garage here though I admit I know very little of EDM history. With all this said, there are likewise genres listed that are irrefutably full of shit. Take "charred death:" it's just a collection of a few symphonic black/death bands touted as being more 'insane'-sounding than the average BM band. Nobody, I repeat, fucking NOBODY in the metal scene has ever used the term "charred death" to describe this kind of music, let alone any kind of music. The only place this term is found is OP's link and articles about that same link. Furthermore, supposed subgenres such as "necrogrind" exist only as a name for a few bands as opposed to the style of those bands. Even if "necrogrind" was legit, I have a hard time believing it would be any different from goregrind or brutal death metal. All I want to say here is take this 'map' with a grain of salt because it's likely more concerned with gathering as much data as possible then checking on whether that data is significant or reliable.

Re: Every Noise At Once
One more thing I have to comment on, as if that longass rant wasn't enough: if you click on any of the genres, you get a tiny window with a ">>" symbol that links you to that genre's own dedicated page. That page consists of another map much like the genre map, but this time linked with artists in the genre you clicked. And guess where those artist links go?
Spotify. These guys are sponsored by gysjshsysndndksjsjffnkkn Spotify. Let me tell you something about Spotify: Spotify doesn't need to exist. It's a belated corporate response to streaming audio technology thats already been perfected FOR FREE by literally everybody else for years now. It's existence is almost as worse as the RIAA's. I admit I'm exaggerating a bit; what I don't want to exaggerate is how your wallet will thank you for avoiding this wholly unnecessary app-that-doesn't-need-to-be-an-app.
I don't want to be the guy who jumps on the chance to shit all over something immediately, then shits on it some more and piles that shit up until you can't tell what was being shat on in the first place... beating a dead horse, that's what I was trying to say.
But seriously, fuck these guys.
