Post 20 years later, I finally beat BoF3
It's been nearly 20 years since Breath of Fire 3 came out on the playstation, and I remember playing it fairly early on (one of the first games we played on the playstation, and one of the first games I bought for myself). Last night, I finally beat the game. I've long held it as one of my favorite games though.

Part of the reason it took so long is because, as a kid, when I had gotten to the final boss (and lost the first attempt) my sister stepped on the disc and cracked it soon after. It was a hard game to find when I bought it initially, it was very difficult to find for a long time after that (i eventually just bought it online as an adult).
In any case, I finally finished the game, just in time for it to have it's PSP version (with a few extras) released to the PSN. I'm debating getting that version now for the improved fishing mini-game.

But, man, that took a long time. I'm finally beating a lot of these playstation era rpgs that I loved. It was only last year that I finally finished FF7, despite getting to the final disc several times before. Finally beat Chrono Cross a few months ago as well (on a save set I started the week my first child was born). Finally beat Saga Frontier (one character playthrough) a couple years ago I guess (still need to find Saga Frontier 2). Making good progress on FF9 (a playthrough that I started with Rosie while we were dating).

I never did play Chrono 2... what was it called? Chrono cross?

So, I need to acquire a console I can download PS1 games on.

Dino Crises was just resident evil, with dinosaurs. Slightly better writing, I suppose.

I was never that interested in Dino Crisis, or Resident Evil for that matter, but I do have 1 and 2 now on the psn as they were like, a dollar or less each at some point. Played it a bit, does have a resident evil feel about it, but with dinosaurs instead of zombies. Seems if you're into that kind of thing it would be a good time.

Get a controller.
If its not a controller for PC, get an adpater for it.
Download EPSXE
Go to emuparadise or some similar site for ISOs.
Set up the plugins.
Try not to cackle like a mad man when nostalgia hits you.

And yes, yes it's called Chrono Cross and is a bit uh. Different feeling than the first one, thats for sure.

Does the emulator work well? I've had issues with emulators from that era of gaming, and thus have kind of just given up.

There are a few decent playstation 1 emulators out there, though many haven't been updated in a while so sometimes have problems, but there are also plenty that will read the actual game cds. Chrono Cross isn't terribly hard to find a copy of for a decent price, as is also the case with several psx final fantasy games other than 7. That said, ps2 and 3s can all play playstation 1 games, and Chrono Cross is also in the psn and goes on sale pretty cheap frequently. And, since it's in psn, it could be played on a vita or psp I think. SO... many options. ps2s can be found pretty dirt cheap now, just check a few thrift stores (playstation one even cheaper for that matter).

Most PS3's are not backwards compatible. They stopped that functionality after the first year of manufacturing it. I know, sold em, and got bitched at when it happened.

As for PS2, still have one somewhere.

That's actually a misconception slightly. Backwards compatibility with the PS2 stopped early, but every model I've seen (and I originally had a slim) are backwards compatible with the PS1. They didn't need to add in extra hardware to accomplish the ps1 emulation, so they left it in. The only problem you run into there is that timing will be slightly off due to latency introduced by the upscaling or something.

The ps2 thing is really convoluted, but I've gotten to the point where I mostly know the exact model numbers that are backwards compatible, and what kind of compatibility they have (some have more hardware, some are partially software and thus often have worse compatibility).

I used to switch between an emu simply called psx 1.13 (wich is outdated and seemingly abandoned since a few years back) and ePSXe. ePSXe is according to myself the one working best right now. Getting the plugins to work in your favor depending on the game is a bit of a chore, but still easy in comparison with the PS2 and Gamecube/wii emulator plugins. You can easily play all the classics without so much as maybe changing one setting here and there. You need BIOS for it, but thats also easily found. Just google it :P Roms are easy to find too. Want to buy them, certain games still have relatively cheap copies lying about.

But if you feel you have no patience, just get a ps3, go on the Playstation Network (PSN) and pray to your god that they've added your game. I know some of the FF games are on there, think one of the BoFs is as well and so on. They have some ps1 games as downloads, so make sure you got a HDD for your ps3 :P

I said PS3 is not backwards compatible, which you mentioned. I know all PS2's are backward compatible.

Sorry, that was actually a typo, I meant all ps3s are backwards compatible with the ps1 (hence my further explanation about the models that are NOT backwards compatible with the ps2). This is largely because they didn't need to use hardware emulation (at least that's one explanation I've heard, though I've seen others that would contradict that. Bottom line, they all have it).
