"I will have you know, that was none of my doing, Mr. Yemhelch." Karliah stated, hand still on the hilt of her blade, she watched his movement carefully as he began his line of questioning.

"Yeah, well you did give the order. That's pretty much hardcore management 301 if you ask me." he replied. "Anyway, I'm not much for internal power politics so lets leave that be. What I want to know is why would a religious organization actively conspire with a bunch of corpse-raping necromancer scum to frame an innocent woman to the crime of murder?"

Karliah gasped, "The audacity! That's an allegation of something I never did. I never knew any necromancer had a hand in the case. In any case, it seems my presence in this town is no longer required, and that necromancer brought his friends over to raid the church. Best I can tell you of any involvement I had was simply in accepting the case itself."

Karliah turned away from him as a dragon was lead outside for her. She turned to face him once more, "Mr. Yemhelch, do not make an enemy of the Church of Lumbra. I am not saying that as a threat, but as a warning. Without the presence of our priests and templars or our bishops and paladins, surely the necromancers would have taken Cyndar by now. If you make an enemy of both sides in this war of faiths, do not think for one second either side will be forgiving."

Getting onto the dragon, she finished, "If you have any more questions, please ask them now. I must return to Cyndar with haste and report my failure."

"Exactly. The thief they hired was an expendable pawn. He was put in place to deflect attention away from the fact that a big-wig necromancer was about to murder someone. I call THAT collaboration." he replied. "Once his actions were exposed, he was clearly marked to be the fall guy. You of all people saw that."

He watched her climb and steady herself.

"They burned the thief, too. Just because he fucked up." Yemhelch continued. "What makes you think they'll keep you alive once they figure out you failed them as well? Instead, let me give you a warning - whoever burned that 'talented thief' so easily can burn you as well. When you return to Cyndar, I recommend you think carefully before doing something stupid." He paused for breath.

"To answer your warning... Its just as you said back when we met. I'm only seeking the truth - if that'll make me enemies from around the world, I suppose this world is truly rotten."

"Still your decision to make, Lady Karliah. I still suspect that some elements in the church are working with the necromancers. No longer an accusation, after what happened today. Whether you live or die - know that at least. Have a safe journey."

Post Re: Chronicles of Jungalore Main RP Thread
She had been in the library all day, having found some interesting scrolls regarding magic casting and focused use when the alerted shouts started. "Fire! Fire in the Church!"

Looking out, she saw the church just across the block belch black smoke from the windows - and a crowd of people rushing to put out the flames before they could spread to other buildings. Putting down the tome she was using as a reference, she also ran down the short stairs into the road, quickly grabbing some buckets of water to help the other volunteers put down the blaze.

Too late, the Church's roofing billowed as the material burned, raining embers into the crowd and the nearby roofs. The damage would be severe, but as more volunteers joined the fray and trained mages with ice spells arrived from the Pagoda, the blaze was finally contained. The church would need significant repairs, but overall - no buildings had burnt down. Natsuki and some other volunteers stood down as several healers and wardsmen entered the smoldering church to look for any survivors, giving them room to set up an emergency tent and a forward investigation office.

As the crowd dispersed, she wondered how Mikkael and the others were dealing with the court case at the Pagoda. Perhaps she should take a look...

Post Re: Chronicles of Jungalore Main RP Thread
Eiryk barely made it back in time, huffing and puffing as he dropped the backpack to the ground filled with all the requested goods. Aya counted each as he greedily drank from a pitcher of water.

"... 18, 19, 20! You did it!" She congratulated him.

Eiryk wheezed a meek cheer as he let the metal pitcher fall to the ground. Aya smiled and patted him on the shoulder as he looked forward. A familiar face began approaching him and Aya.

"Excuse me, I must speak with Mr. Advento." The Paragon spoke.

"Why is that?" Aya asked, "He's in pretty bad shape as you can see."

"Quite simply, I have a request. A private request."

"It's... It's okay Aya... He's a friend." Eiryk answered, slowly getting up.

When they had walked a ways out of the city, the man spoke once again with Eiryk, "So, how are things?"

"Could be better." Eiryk answered in an exhausted manner, "I get shot out of the sky, kidnapped, and then have to run errands for that girl. Not to mention that there's no smithy here."

"Well, let me assure you, you are on the right path." The Paragon said with a gleeful look in his eye, however, it was just as quickly replaced as his voice shifted tone, "Tell me, do you recall a female paladin, blonde hair, blue eyes? Part of the inquisition?"

"I... vaguely remember one... Karliah?" Eiryk asked, "Is there something going on?"

"Quite," The Paragon answered, looking again to the city gates, "Eiryk, you have a choice to make here... Either you can stay here at Vex Vinas, continue your training, and eventually you will reach priesthood, or you can stray a little from the oath I have provided for you and save Karliah from certain death."

Eiryk grabbed the Paragon by his jacket, "W-What!? Karliah is going to die? Tell me everything!"

"Peace, Eiryk, She failed to provide a successful prosecution of a sinner against Lumbra... The girl truly wasn't guilty of murder, but you can guarantee the archbishops will be none too pleased to hear this when she returns to Cyndar." He turned away as he continued, "They will also not be pleased to know that due to her recklessness, she got the inquisition kicked out of Vel Da Ir and killed."

"... By Lumbra's word..." Eiryk voiced, his grip loosening. He looked into the eyes of the Paragon, "It is clear where my mission lies, sir Paragon, but what do I do? If she never makes contact..."

"That is where you may find yourself committing unforgivable acts against the church. They will want you dead as well."

"So I need to save her after she is sentenced to death... What do I do then? I can't just come back here, they'll have me murdered on sight."

"Go to the Bandit Isles. North side." The Paragon instructed, "Take refuge with the Sand Sharks. Soon, everything will make sense."

Eiryk nodded and began to take his leave.

"Also, Eiryk, I picked this up on my way over..." He tossed Eiryk a box, "Have a Merry Yuleday."

Eiryk nodded and ran for the teleportation mage. He didn't have time to say his farewell to Aya, much more important matters were now at hand.

Post Re: Chronicles of Jungalore Main RP Thread
Eiryk arrived in Cyndar promptly, and first checked the chapel devoted to Lumbra. Even in the darkness of night, the chapel was the brightest building in the city. It seemed Karliah had yet to arrive. However, he knew that she would need to first tell them of what happened, otherwise, things may not go well for her in the future.

Sure enough, within the next hour she arrived via carriage to Cyndar, and walked into the building. Eiryk silently stepped in after her, keeping his distance, and making sure not to alert anyone. He did manage to barely make it through, but he was caught as he watched Karliah enter the archbishop chambers.

"Eiryk?" Paladin Gawayne asked as he noticed Eiryk's presence.

"A-A-Ah! Sir Armosa. Haven't seen you in a while!" Eiryk meekly voiced, putting on a nervous smile. Gawayne took immediate note of it and asked, "What brings you to the archbishop chambers? Fledgling acolytes have no business here."

Eiryk broke into a nervous sweat, would he lie or tell the truth? Gawayne was in the dark about it. Perhaps if he stalled Gawayne long enough, or caused a distraction...

Eiryk made an attempt to speak, but didn't fare too well in trying to convince Gawayne to leave him be.

"I was merely... contemplating how interesting it would be to be an archbishop."

"Eiryk, what is really on your mind?" Gawayne asked, beginning to escort him away from the room. Eiryk knew he couldn't struggle against the reptal standing much taller than him, let alone with him being a hulking paladin in full plate armor, save for the helmet. Without the knowledge of what they were going to do to her, he had two options; Either check the basement of the church after enough time, or check the prison.

Luckily for Eiryk, by some stroke of luck, he hung out on the walls of Cyndar long enough and caught Karliah being escorted to the prison. Unfortunately, it would be suicidal to attempt a break-in.

Deep underneath the castle, and the setting of one of the most famous uprisings in the history of Jungalore, the prison under Castle Soraen contained some of the worst criminals, and it would be under constant surveillance. Lucky for Eiryk, he also overheard the exact block where he would find Karliah.

"Set her up in B6. Set the execution date for three days from now."

"How much did they pay this time?"

"Three million."

"You know, it feels kind of wrong to be doing something like this."

"Don't you like the money?"

"I do, but..."

"Well then don't complain. Everyone gets a cut, and if you want to forfeit yours, then just keep talking. I will gladly take it."

"It does beat having to adventure with some lowlife peasants or scholars."

"Speaking of which, did you hear about the last troop sent out to Frenga County?"

"Not at all... What is it this time?"

This time? Eiryk figured it would be best to do some exploring on his own after finishing up this mission. However, three days would be too soon to plan a break-in and then a breakout. Now he understood what the Paragon was getting at. He could potentially be in more trouble, given the info. If he had more power, he could full-well attempt to wrestle her free, but how many guards would he incapacitate? How would Lumbra see him after such heinous acts once he finally steps into the after-life?

A plan would be necessary in order to carry it out. He would need a little bit of luck on his side, though...

Post Re: Chronicles of Jungalore Main RP Thread
Frenga Farms. All was silent - the moonlight providing a serene blanket of light to the quiet village whose inhabitants had already gone to bed early to greet the morning sun of the first year of the day tomorrow. A soft wind rustled through the thatch and hay roofs of the houses, and the silent night gave respite to all those that slept under the starry sky, safe from the horrors of the world.

Then, the lone water-clock in the small church struck 12 at midnight.

Through the twisted depths of the horrific jungle, Father Ieraus ran - naked and sobbing. Assaulted from directions he could not even visualize by things that his mind refused to register. He had never been one for physical exertion - but now, with adrenaline running through his veins and his heartbeat loud enough to hear in the silent, unnatural arena. For hours and hours, he ran. The dark, moonless night cast sinister shadows from a feeble red light that emanated from the ground... and something wet and wriggling fell onto his head, buckling his knees and muffling his scream. Several wet cracks sounded through the air as his face met the slurry-like ground - the agonizing pain of several broken bones pinioned him.

That was when his mind registered something - the sensation that he was being mentally violated; something searching through his mind, rifling through his memories. Shuddering in disgust, he swatted away the fleshy tendrils reaching into his head... and recoiled in terror. His arm had several eyeballs looking right at him in a cold, almost judgmental stare.

Those were his eyes.

Voices began to echo in his head - harsh, guttural speech whose inflections and stanzas could not be copied by mortal tongue. Shaking his head and screaming - anything to stop himself from recalling his past, he howled prayers to Lumbra until his voice cracked.

Finally, the voices in his head abated, slowly merging into a unified voice of the legion. He opened his eyes and faced what seemed like the infinite cosmos - but it wasn't. Each star was an eye.

"Who are you?"

And they all looked directly at him.

Father Ieraus screamed... and woke up. As he did, he felt other screams in his ears as his eyes got used to the sudden light. Looking around the church's quarters, he saw his fellow Brothers of the Cloth, all of them leaping to wakefulness, the same scream locked in their throats as their bodies shuddered into full wakefulness.

Looking at their eyes, he knew - every last priest in this sleeping quarters had the exact same dream.

-

Sitting in his room in the inn, Yemhelch looked over his notes. The small dragon sat on his shoulders, munching on some more jerky and resting. The strange fire in its belly provided a comforting warmth to his back as he pored over his tattered notes.

If Karliah had disregarded his advice, he would probably run into her if he was to infiltrate the prison to question, and if need be, recruit this Sammy that the ex-pirate mentioned. Of course, he would have to be sneaky - none of his theatrics this time. If he was caught, it would be a problem for his friends.

Friends...

He wondered what Mikkael, Natsuki and Philena were up to.

The clock in the public room of the inn struck midnight, and he shuddered as he felt an unnatural coolness seep into the room. As he shut the windows, he felt the urge to sleep rising in him. Standing up, he carefully placed his new friend by the fireplace before stumbling into bed.

Wrapped in a linen blanket and with several feather-stuffed pillows, his movements became dull and empty as sleep overtook him. The dragon looked up from its slumber to look at him, sensing something was wrong. After a few moments, it gave a shrug and went back to sleep, basking in the warmth of the fire.

Post Re: Chronicles of Jungalore Main RP Thread
Nearly morning and Mikkael awoke. He heard a knock at the door and the voice of Natsuki call in. He frantically got dressed into some casual clothing.

"C-Coming!" He shouted in response to the repeated knocks.

"Again?" Philena remarked with a lewd smile.

"Sh-Shush! It's Natsuki. Put some clothes on, please." Mikkael stated in hushed tones. Philena clung to Mikkael with a giggle.

"Let her find out what we've been up to. I sure wouldn't mind.~" She teased before tossing on a white nightgown after moving back to their bed, "There, this should do, yes?"

Mikkael silently gazed at her as lewd thoughts began filling his mind again. The thoughts were broken as he subconsciously turned the door handle, sending him into a panic. Natsuki tried to speak, but was silenced as Mikkael exclaimed, "OH HEY NATSUKI. LOVELY MORNING ISN'T IT?"

He kept the door open only a crack as he put on the worst smile he could. Everything about him looked fishy, and not just because he was a meridian. He still felt naked without his helmet, as having the eye cover meant his expression was more ambiguous. In this case, his expression was clear, and he had no way of covering up the obvious scenario that had been playing out just moments earlier.

Post Re: Chronicles of Jungalore Main RP Thread
The case had already ended, and the courtroom area was... surprisingly closed off, with several mages, kannushi and samurai in the area. As she looked up, she saw one of the stained-glass windows shattered, with debris all over the courtyard.

Her first thought was that Mikkael had gone into one of his bloodthirsty battle-frenzies and attacked the courtroom before escaping. However, asking the guards revealed the answer - not only the rookie lawyer who had picked up the case delivered a turnabout, he had also revealed the real murderer - who had then attempted to assault them, only to get slashed open like a fish before escaping.

Sighing in relief, she returned to the inn with the books she borrowed. She would have a good night's sleep tonight.

-

Morning. She woke up as the pagoda bells reverberated a soft humm across the city's skies. Yawning as she pushed off the blanket, she got dressed and freshened up. With the books packed in her bag, it was time to return to Cyndar, and from there? Perhaps she would finish her thesis and enter the world of advanced spellcasting...

With a decision balancing on her head, she decided to see if Mikkael and Yemhelch were up. Mikkael's room was closest, so she walked over from the hallway and knocked on the door.

Mikkael opened the door just a bit, buck naked, and nervously replied "OH HEY NATSUKI. LOVELY MORNING ISN'T IT?" in a wavering tone - as if he had been physically exerting himself.

She shook her head with a soft smile. "You two finish up whatever you two were doing in there. I'll pretend I saw nothing." she replied as she slid the door shut and walked away.

The room at the end of the hallway was Yemhelch's and decided against knocking. If Mikkael and Philena were going at it, she didn't want to walk in on whatever Yemhelch would be doing at this time. She'd rather get something to eat. Deciding on this course of action, she walked downstairs to the tavern.

Post Re: Chronicles of Jungalore Main RP Thread
Mikkael slid down against the door with an weary sigh.

"I'm too young for this..."

Philena got up, now fully dressed with Mikkael in but only a pair of briefs. She offered him a hand up as he complained, "Why am I always the one getting embarrassed?" Philena merely wrapped her arms around him before giving him a kiss.

"Better?"

He could only look at her and smile, thus Mikkael conceded, "Yeah, better."

He had a look of contention on his face as he got into his regular gear, "You know, Philena, this will not go down well."

The girl gave Mikkael a curious look as she leaned back whilst sitting on the bed, "Is it that I am technically a part of the royal family?"

"Yes. I'm no noble myself. I am just a spellsword." Mikkael noted, "If I really did just impregnate you, then we have a huge situation on our hands."

Philena waved it off, "It's no problem. If anything, it'll be my cousin who arranges anything. I mean, come on, we're the wealthiest family in New Meridia."

Mikkael thought about it for a moment before smiling, "Well, I suppose you're right. In fact, I can think of no situation where the arrangement would cause issue at all."

Being an endangered society, New Meridia adopted many laws once the city had been formed under the waters of Jungalore. From clan housing to play a more important role, to a matriarchal rule, to the rise of the importance of mages, the Taltanis bloodline had always made efforts to ensure that the race would survive. However, not only did this extend to the entire race, but also to bloodlines.

Arranged marriage, though not uncommon, became a staple of meridian culture. While it would be a general practice in human society, most would find freedom in choosing their romantic partners. Meridian nobles, however, would strictly adhere to the principle of arranged marriages in order to keep nobility strong, and in order to allow for a sharing of wealth and power.

Commoners, in that sense, would always be free to marry as they saw fit in the Meridian society, but the wealthier could only become more wealthy as a result of this tradition.

Thus, Mikkael couldn't help but think of it as he finally exited the luxury suite with Philena. The fact that he not only confessed to her and took her virginity, it would be a huge detriment to both her family and his own. While Mikkael had no worries, given that he had already disgraced his father and mother by abandoning a career in the field of magic, he worried as to what was to come now that he made her less desirable in the aspect of maidenhood. He was worried now that she would be cast out of her clan, or worse, cast out of New Meridia.

"Stop it." Philena stated as they made it down the stairs, "Mikkael, you're always so worried. I'll be fine, you'll be fine. Besides, I wouldn't have it any other way."

Mikkael nodded silently, as he remembered there were other issues at hand. Such as...

"MAIL CALL!"

The barkeeper turned to face the mailman as he dropped numerous letters onto the counter, all for guests at the inn. Among them, Mikkael finally caught glimpse of the one letter he had been fearing all this time and watched as it was placed into the mailbox for his room.

Link

"... He was right... Curses..."

"What is it?" Philena asked. Mikkael placed a hand on her shoulder as he went to grab the letter in an envelope with a crest on it. It was addressed to him, and he knew the contents already. Its timing couldn't be any worse. He scorned it, he knew full well that if he followed through with the requests of this letter...

"Mikkael?" Philena asked again, looking into his intense yellow eyes.

"... Philena, we need to go back to the room."

--------------------------------------------------

"Mr. Altans,

By official request of the Vexus Circle, we request that you return to Vex Vinas post-haste. Please bring with yourself the object of high contention, and your study partner, Philena Taltanis, cousin to the meridian crown. This request must be completed within the next three days.

If in three days time your study-party and the item are not brought before the council, a search part will be sent in order to investigate the whereabouts, and a fine of 5,000 Legens will be placed on your head for disregarding the direct orders of the Vexus Circle.

Signed,
Philippus von Hohenheim, Dean of The Vexus University"

Mikkael had a look of utter hatred directed at the paper.

"I knew they would want you back, Philena." Mikkael stated, "I had been hoping that the summons wouldn't be made... But they were. I know the nature of it all. So I want your thoughts..."

"Well," Philena began, "We will need to head back or face the consequences."

Mikkael thought for a moment, he couldn't break anything to her, and so he simply asked, "Listen, if I send you back to them, there will be consequences that we will have to deal with for the rest of our lives."

She could see the mental anguish in Mikkael's face and moved to ask what it was, but Mikkael simply clenched his teeth and continued staring down the letter, as if thinking the parchment before him would disappear as a result of his glare. She could tell that he was torn and felt the same importance of another letter she had just recently been presented not a day prior.

"Mikkael... Whatever it is, I know you will find a way out of it." She stated. He looked up from the letter for the first time in a while and into her serene eyes. She smiled and moved over to him, "Remember, I will support you if you need it. So... Have faith. Not just in yourself, but have faith in me as well." As if finally feeling for the first time, Mikkael couldn't help but begin crying in front of the one he loved. To answer the letter would send her to her death.

"... Okay. But, let's leave them this letter, too. Natsuki was checking with the tavern for some food. Surely, she'll come back."

As Philena headed outside, Mikkael added one final bit of info to the back of the letter.

"To Yemhelch and Natsuki,

I am sorry.

There are urgent matters that will leave me unable to continue traveling with you for the time being. In the meanwhile, if you wish to find me once more, look towards Selk. I shall be making a move there. I promise, we will meet again.

Best regards,
Mikkael Altans, Ex-Spellsword"

Leaving the letter neatly folded on the table in their room, Mikkael and Philena set out for the dragon port.

--------------------------------------------------

It wasn't a long ride as they made their way to Vex Vinas using the dragons. They had arrived in the snowy city, but even with the beautiful scenery of magic at work, Mikkael couldn't shake off the twisting in his gut. Pain, he was resistant to, but not of this kind. However, as Philena grabbed his hand, she smiled and lead him to the Tower of Will. She would always have such a strong influence on his emotional well-being.

They had walked up to the desk in the tower, and Mikkael noted how his great grandfather was speaking with some mages off to the side. The elder meridian walked over to them and gave a bow to Philena.

"Mikkael, you arrived earlier than expected. Tell me, is everything alright?"

"No." Mikkael answered, a stern look on his face, "Quite frankly, I'm pissed off."

"Mikkael, you probably shouldn't speak to an elder wizard like that." Philena chided him.

"Well, worry not, Philena is in good hands. We will have the two of you separated for a few days, but things will be just fine... Yes, just fine." Mikkael's great grandfather stated, "I will have these two escort her up to the study, we are merely dealing with some new ASP research..."

Mikkael gritted his teeth, he was not too thrilled knowing that the results would be catastrophic, but a smile broke out, because he had some terrible news. However, Philena smiled to him and whispered something in his ear.

"Rwyf wrth fy modd i chi gymaint, Mikkael. Remember, have faith in yourself... and me."

Mikkael let her escorts lead her up the stairway as he watched her go. He took the words she stated to heart and couldn't stop himself from smiling.

"Now, Mikkael, do you still have the-"

"Nope." Mikkael said with a grin, "I... destroyed the gauntlet."

Silence.

"Is that so...?" The old man asked.

"Not only that..." Mikkael continued, his smile growing even more sinister, "I'm done with my studies here."

"Wh-What?" The older meridian asked, now with him carrying the angry expression rather than Mikkael, "So you destroy an important artifact, and now you're saying that you wish to leave!?"

"Exactly." Mikkael stated, "Quite frankly, I'm tired of all this."

A chill went down the elder's spine as he demanded, "Mikkael, you will follow me to the dean's chambers."

At the topmost floor of the Tower of Will, Mikkael was commanded to wait outside the chambers as his grandfather angrily entered the office. He certainly was none too pleased, so much so that Mikkael was placed in magic bindings. He was unhappy with things, and didn't expect things to go so well anyways, but now things were looking even more grim. At best he would be expelled, and at worst, he would be executed.

However, as he was waiting, a familiar face showed up.

"I suppose it's time we enacted our plan. Right, Mikkael?" The Paragon asked.

Mikkael smiled and nodded.

Mikkael nodded and rushed down the stairs alongside the Paragon. The two of them began getting into battles with every guard that dared cross them.

"You know, after hearing so many lies... It's good to know someone willing to be honest with me." Mikkael joked.

Post Re: Chronicles of Jungalore Main RP Thread
"I see, so they have imprisoned witnesses - those who know too much."

...

Yemhelch placed a black eyeball on a square in the simple wooden board, and looked the shattered hole seeping black smoke in the eyes, all 108 of them. "What do you plan to do?" a voice from the shambling fracture in reality asked, a bemused grin on hundreds of toothy grins as he considered his next move, a milky white eyeball clenched between two twisted fingers reached.

"I suppose I'll have to sneak in there and question him." Yemhelch finally sighed, as he watched his opponent complete a picture-perfect Tertiary Star.

"HehHAH!" the voice echoed in his head. "You remind me of myself in my youth."

...

The silence was interrupted as Yemhelch placed another black eyeball on the board, countering his opponent's Tertiary Star Avalanche with a well-placed Two Cubes. "I am you." he replied, letting a gentle smile wash over his face. "And you are me."

"So you are. What about your friends?"

"I'll have to explain my reasoning to them. I'm not one to leave friends behind."

"Cute."

The thing seeping from the fracture reached another arm forwards, and with a cold, clinical click, placed a black eyeball on the board, destroying Yemhelch's careful defense plan. The board was full, and both players tallied their score.

"1271 to 1276, my favor" the voice chuckled. "Good game."

Yemhelch stood up. "Will there be anything else?"

"No."

"Very well. I'll return to the mission, then." Yemhelch turned around and walked away. "We'll have another game soon."

"Speaking of mission... there's something you should know."

"What is it?"

"Your friends, I think they're in danger."

That had his attention. "How? Perhaps Baphomatt?"

"Close, but when I looked to his mind, I managed to plant my presence there - a feeble awareness of what they were doing. A day ago in your time ago, I sensed the words 'ritual', and your traveling companion Philena. From them."

Yemhelch recalled how Baphomatt had yelled something about eyes, and attempted to murder his friend yesterday.

"Exactly. The Eyes of the Demilich." the figure sitting at the table smiled. "I believe that may be what they're after."

"Mikkael would never..."

"Really? Then, all I ask you to do is check their room. Carefully." the man at the table raised his hood to reveal an empty space filled with the infinite cosmos. "Your mission or your friends. Choose your next decision carefully."

-

He woke up... headfirst in the cold coals of the fireplace. The dragon had gone onto the windowsill to bask in the rays of the morning sun. It looked at him as he got up - was that a smile? He couldn't quite tell...

The voice echoed in his head. Surely, they couldn't have been attacked here? Disheveled and reeking of coal dust, he managed to stumble into the bathroom to wash most of the stuff from his face before walking to the room where Mikkael and Philena had retired to.

The door was open.

Quickening his stride, he pulled back the door. Empty. No sign of either of them. Perhaps he had the wrong room? This thought was crushed as their scent, unusually warm even now wafted into his nostrils. Careful not to disturb a potential crime scene, he carefully tiptoed into the room looking for a sign of a fight.

He found none.

He was about to leave when he saw the letter on the tabletop. He carefully picked it up.

-

"Vex Vinas, huh?" Yemhelch muttered to himself as he carefully pocketed the letter. The tone of the letter indicated a trade of sorts - one that would not be negotiated. That'd explain why Mikkael had to leave - and told Natsuki and himself to rendezvous as far away from there as possible.

If those necromancers were anything like Baphomatt, then Mikkael and Philena were being suckered into a very dangerous situation. He had to find Natsuki.

Post Re: Chronicles of Jungalore Main RP Thread
immy exited the bar, not making eye contact with anyone, but responding when someone told him "nice job" or "you really killed it out there." Jesse slipped something into his bag, presumably money from the performance, but he didn't have time to look. Instead, he had somewhere else to be, the Pirate's Guild.

He looked in the direction that the people who robbed the bank went knowing full well even if they weren't Pirates - which they probably were - they probably had to pay the guild some sort of commission. He passed a few bums begging for change, and a few women who were clearly prostitutes making cat calls at him. Yet he avoided them all keeping his hands in his pockets until he reached the cemetery.

"I don't know what the Pirates Guild looks like, so I'm kind of stuck here..." Timmy thought to himself. He entered the only building in the cemetery, a tomb of sorts. Inside he saw a statue of a pirate with a stone sword in hand on a pedestal. In front of the statue was the stone coffin of the first pirate. The floor was made of stone and had sand here and there as well. He had played enough video games and seen enough Indiana Jones movies to know that the sword was probably a lever of some kind. He nervously applied pressure to it. The blade rotated and a click could be heard behind the statue. Looking behind, nine keys presented themselves, each lightly engraved with numbers one through nine.
Timmy stared at the combination numbers. He thought he was going to mad thinking on the combination. Finally, he decided, "Fuck it, I think I have an idea as to what it is, I mas as well give it a try..."

Inputting the first three, he held his breath as he pressed the last number. A click was heard as the contraption reset itself. The wall behind him slid down revealing a long stairway leading downwards. He released his breath, exclaiming, "Thank the sweet merciful nigger named Carl!" and excitedly ran down the stairs and wondering what he would find. He suddenly found himself in front of a desk and neatly made wooden door with a male receptionist sitting at the desk.

"Ay mate, I don't think I've ever seen the likes of ya down 'ere before." The man stated, "Ya looks to be a scout. We normally don't take your kind. Did you come with one of our boys?"

"Well sir," Timmy said nervously straightened himself out, "since we're going to see a lot of each other, I feel I should be honest with you. I saw your crew robbing a bank and I told them back there I intend to become a pirate one day. I want to see how you, you know, operate. Would you like to know how I got in?"

The man at the desk waved a hand, "Nope, don't need to know. If you're looking into being a pirate, then you're in the right place, but I'll need to sign you up for access. I'll need a name and a city of residence, that is, if you have a house. We mostly need it so we don't go robbing any of the crew."

"My name is Michael Roggow. As of right now I don't have a house. I'm sort of traveling. It's kind of a long story."
The man wrote down the info, flipping through a series of books here and there. When finished, he nodded, handing Timmy a piece of parchment which detailed all his features, age, and even how tall he was. Either the man in front of him was incredibly skilled, or he was some sort of wizard. Nonetheless, the man continued, "Right. That card will let ya come into the guild any time you want. By all means, enjoy the booze and food, everything is free. We also run a special market down here, but right now I'd recommend against buying anything..."

The man paused, scratching his head, "I think I'm forgettin; somethi-Oh... Right, welcome to the Pirate's Guild, step on in."

Post Re: Chronicles of Jungalore Main RP Thread
((The following post is based entirely on a dream I had last night which was so vividly real that I had to post it while it was still fresh in my memory.))

Mikkael circled around the area, with the necromancer standing only a few meters from him. The area was obliterated with many of the archive boxes destroyed. He knew full well what this all meant.

"So, who's paying you, necromancer?" Mikkael asked, almost demanding a response. The necromancer let out a laugh, like a cackle.

"Meridian," she began, "You have everything backwards. It is not someone paying us..." She let her voice trail off.

Mikkael began to think to himself as she pulled out her dagger, "Damn it...! Can I really win against a necromancer?" He swung his buster sword over his shoulder, readying it in front of him in a manner where he could analyze what do to from a distance.

"Oh? An impressive blade, but blades are nothing compared to magic..."

However, he heard someone approaching.

"Mikkael..."

"I know everything now, grandfather."

Mikkael turned and looked his grandfather in the eyes. His grandfather did nothing at first, but then smiled and snapped his fingers. In an instant, the two of them were on top of the Tower of Will.

"Face me then, Mikkael, let us see if you really are worth anything to this school of magic..."

"What!?" Mikkael questioned. His grandfather didn't waste a second and began summoning a rather large magic circle. Mikkael, due to his hesitation, couldn't manage to stop the cast, and a meteor plummeted to the site of battle. His father left the area, laughing to himself.

Afterwards, everything went to black...

--------------------------------------------------

Mikkael awoke in chains in front of the council.

"Assault. Vandalism. Murder. Mikkael Altans, these are all serious charges."

Mikkael clenched his fists, "SO IS CONSPIRING AGAINST THE PEOPLE! WHY!? WHY WOULD YOU DARE WORK WITH THEM OF ALL PEOPLE!?"

"Foolish Mikkael, do you not understand? These are the needs of the many. Think of it, the possibilities are endless if our research goes as planned." The dean explained. Mikkael couldn't do anything but listen.

But they were not done.

"Mikkael, what is that girl to you anyways? Just because she is of royal blood to your crown, it means nothing."

"Don't you DARE talk about Philena like that! I will see to it that you watch your tongue." Mikkael shouted back.

"Hah... All bark, but you have no bite, Mikkael. You were troublesome, weren't you? After all, you implanted in her quite the problem for us."

Spoiler: show
Mikkael could not comprehend thoroughly what happened next. In the dean's hands was a Meridian egg, "Naturally, we cannot have any such problems. Hence, we have... removed those issues affecting the results."

Mikkael tried to shout, but it was too late, the man clenched his fist around the egg and it splattered in his hands. He threw the remains at Mikkael who couldn't hold anything back anymore.

"Take him away, to the deepest cell." His grandfather demanded from the side, a smile wide like the one on his superior.

"I... I hate you... All of you..." The young meridian began uttering to himself, as two heavily armored rune lords picked Mikkael up by the chains, "I HATE ALL OF YOU! I WILL FUCKING FIND AND MURDER EVERY ONE OF YOU! DO YOU HEAR ME!? I WILL FUCKING KILL EACH AND EVERY LAST ONE OF YOU! EVEN IF I HAVE TO CRAWL OUT FROM THE DEPTHS OF THE SHADOW REALM TO DO IT! YOU WILL ALL REGRET THIS FUCKING DAY!"

"Get that fool out of my sight." The dean coldly stated as Mikkael was dragged away.

--------------------------------------------------

The cold penetrated the skin of the meridian. In such a short time after killing seven people, he had gone through a wide range of emotions. Sadness being the strongest among them.

"I don't... I don't know what to do now... Philena... Oh by the powers that be... What do I do now...?"

"Simple." A familiar voice softly spoke. Unlike moments prior, the Paragon was none too pleased.

"YOU...!"

"Stay your hand, Mikkael. Something changed." The Paragon spoke, "You see... Normally, I would watch destiny from afar, and in ridding you of the gauntlet, I was supposed to help you save Philena. However, she did something. She, a soulless being, changed everything, and your thread changed along with it."

Mikkael felt himself sliding down a wall once more, "Paragon, my children are DEAD! I don't need to hear how she is soulless from you!"

"True as it may be... I really never intended for this to happen." He breathed, cutting through the lock with his spear. "However, you must not give up here."

"I would rather die here, I think." Mikkael stated back. The Paragon kicked the cell door open and threw Mikkael onto his back.

"Mikkael, I'm not asking you to do this for me. I'm asking you to do it for her. Don't you think she deserves to be happy? To live? To fulfill HER wishes?"

"I..." Mikkael tried to fight back, but could not, "... Paragon, I want your help..."

"Then, we'll get out of here, and I will help you save Philena." He promised, giving him a weak, but genuine smile, "Do not worry, I will not fail you like I did just now. This is my promise as a being free from the binds of destiny."

The Paragon walked out of the prison, Mikkael on his back, and spread his white wings, flying at high speeds towards Selk. Mikkael, asleep through all of it, awoke outside the tavern.

"Mikkael, I have made some arrangements. I paid off your bounty using your money. I have also gone ahead and made some arrangements to get you set up with a new mentor..."

"Um..." A quiet girl came up, "Mr. Mikkael?"

"Ah, hello. I'm sure the two of you have met before."

Mikkael looked up and saw another familiar face. A very vaguely familiar face that he remembered seeing just once before. He went ahead and asked, "Aren't you that bandit girl?"

"Y-Yes." She stated, "The Paragon here told me you wanted to become a... bandit?"

Mikkael gave a look of scorn to the Paragon. However, the paragon smiled, "Mikkael, you have lost many things because of my foolishness, however, I know what you want."

Turning to the sea, The Paragon spoke further, "Vengeance, and to save the one you love... That girl can help get you just that. I promise. This path, now, is your path."

"Don't promise me that." Mikkael responded, gripping the Paragon's arm, "Promise me this. Promise to ensure they don't do anything to Philena. Got it? Even if you are some sort of god, that godhood will not save you from anything coming from me if Philena is so much as glanced at in the wrong way."

The Paragon gave a nod, "I promise."

The Paragon disappeared into the distance. All Mikkael could think of as he was being lead by the girl out to the desert were the words Philena left him with.

"Have faith."

--------------------------------------------------

Before Mikkael left with the girl, he had a few things to do. He paid the bank money to get some mages to transfer his home over to Selk. On top of this, he sold all his obsolete gear and bought new gear for his new class, also making himself some new headgear. If he was to take on the Dean of Magic, he would need the best armor he could find. He stored his Buster Sword away, knowing full well that when the time comes, he will surely see it used once again. For now, though, Mikkael would need to train further, and see to it that his skills are sharp enough to take on the mages who had wronged him, and especially those necromancers.

He left his home after he was finished, and met with the girl.

"Let's go."

Thus, they set off into the desert...

Post Re: Chronicles of Jungalore Main RP Thread
Using the money he had won from the trial, he had bought a honed tanto from the former daimyo's personal smithy who created custom weapons for guests of honor. The girl working there bowed gratefully, and told him that anyone who defended Lady Hiroko's honor against all odds was welcome here, and he was asked to pick a weapon. So he did - a straight blade so sharp, that a leaf falling on it would be cut in twain. The tip so well honed that it slid through the demonstration claybag like a hot knife through butter. An excellent replacement for his old stone knife, which he had stabbed into the ribs of the necromancer.

"The tip is sharpened to a point by the use of a pair of diamonds grinding away the crystal-steel while it's white-hot in the forge. This deposits a film... a layer of micro-diamond granules onto the surface of the blade as it sets, creating an edge that holds against all odds. The blade is folded inwards several times, over and over, creating a spinal core that can withstand all impacts. The edge of the blade is similarly honed with a crystal-steel. This blade requires almost no maintenance - a grindstone would get gouged if we stick this here. The handle is almost twice as long as my grip, comes with a pommel that allows me to grip it in multiple angles."

Of course, such fine crystal-steel blades did not come cheap - it had cost him 100,000 Legens.

After talking it over with Natsuki, he left for Vex Vinas.

-

He arrived in Vex Vinas a short flight via dragon later, and he already knew exactly where to go. An alarm had been sounded - intruders in the Vex Vinas University Tower! Stepping into a small crowd of sellswords led by a sorcerer, he followed them into the tower, iron sword in hand. Just as they were about to gather at the courtyard, he quietly broke off to a side door and entered.

This tanto was his best purchase ever, for the time being. And he was becoming very good at using it in closed quarters. He had stepped into the space of a guard, jamming the iron sword into the heart, and before his compatriot could react, he plucked out the tanto and threw it like a dart into the guard's face before he could even scream, pinioning the guard to the wall and cutting the brain stem.

Silence. He was in. However, he had no idea where to go - the library, the sorcerer leading the sellswords had said. Now to find the lib-

An explosion rocked the stonework.

Well, that just made things easier.

Their cartilage bones gave easily under pressure. He remembered how amusingly easy it was to grasp the back of their heads and pull, as if gutting a fish using the fingers. However, that was the easy part - using the distraction Mikkael had provided, he had managed to sneak into the archives. As Mikkael battled the necromancer, Yemhelch worked gingerly in the shadows - gathering what few books he found regarding the necromancers' rituals.

"Added Soul Phenomenon Notes"
"Transaction Ledger"

Before he could finish, a new presence arrived - something so strong that Yemhelch dived for cover. Before he could react, however - both Mikkael and this elite necromancer vanished. Silence descended onto the wrecked archive, with books scattered this way and that.

As he walked towards the corpse of the fallen necromancer who Mikkael's new friend had cleaved clean through with a spear, he noticed a book bound in all black spilled out next to a safe that had been smashed open alongside several scrolls and sheets - the book carefully inlaid with gold in a script he did not recognize. Giving it a readthrough and a glance over to the papers, he realized he had no idea what these stylized runics meant - but the few diagrams that peppered the texts made it look very important.

?Evidence? acquired.
?Unknown book? acquired.
?Strange List? acquired.

That was when an even bigger explosion rocked the tower. He could feel it sway from the sheer force of impact.

Quickly placing the books he found in his bag, he made for the staircase... only to find that it had collapsed - the arm of a single meridian mage jutting out from the rubble. He needed to find cover, fast. This dead human would do, for now.

Kneeling down, he slowly removed his gear and swapped it with the corpse. The copper mail shirt and the sword - then as he adjusted the robes, the final touch. Slipping the tanto into a makeshift scabbard on his arm, he sat down by the corpse and as he had done to the rogue in the alleyway in Cyndar - he placed his hands over the face of the corpse and focused.

Finally, he stood up - the necromancer's general facial features now his own. It wasn't a perfect copy, but it would pass most inspections. That was when he got a whiff of smoke.

"Fire..."
