Post using muh computer in 256 colour
I was playing sim city 2k today. And well, I was too lazy to turn my computer back to 32 bit colour.

I'm using a third party generic video card driver. Well, since it's very basic, there's limited 2d acceleration (it's all done through frame buffer).

So I can view youtube fine on it, but one annoying thing about it is when viewing webpages, scrolling down for some strange reason is choppy (Keep in mind, videos play fine, but scrolling is choppy, it's just kind of confusing)

Left my resolution settings on 1024 x 768 with 256 colour, and scrolling is a lot less choppy than when I had it set to the same but with 32 bit colour.

Though umm... when ever I wanna play youtube video or play a flash game... I think I'll set the colour settings higher. But really, since my sound card pooped out, those two things are kind of boring now (That's why you see me so much typing stuff you dont care about)

But screen elements are fucking ugly in 256 colour. I never used this video mode very much (except for games like sim city 2k) The lowest colour depth I've ever been forced to use by obselete hardware has been 16 bit colour. Like OMFG, I can't wait until I have my laptop. This thing works great, but it's such a old beast. (I think the best thing in it is the CPU, since it takes like 30 seconds to boot Windows 98)

Post Re: using muh computer in 256 colour
Well, this problem in question is due to the fact I couldnt find my drivers for my video card. And I am buying a new computer soon. I just have teh wait. I'm geting 2k on this bitch soon, because I'm geting Office 2003. (Plus Windows 98, both depresses and pisses me off, even though for some strange reason this 10 year old computer works better than a lot of new ones I use)

God, every time I see that DOS prompt for two seconds when booting, I feel like i'm in junior high again. Hell, seeing IE 6 makes me nostalgic.

I dont know why people just dont clue in and stop using Internet Explorer(espeicly 6). I watch people using internet explorer and they loudly say "This computer is fucked up" Meanwhile after they get off said computer, when I'm on it using Firefox 3 i run into no problems. Those people dont seem to get it when I tell them "It's not the computer, it's internet explorers fault"

I think your dad is living in the past. Firefox works great with everything. Only a couple things dont work, and it's rare. It's ussually a site that isnt even useful anyways to begin with.

Yeah, he only experienced FF 1.0.0.3...

I used to use Safari for PC... *_*

I'm so thankful I switched to FF...

But check out newegg's Desktop PCs, they have a Everex gPC2 recertified for $134.99:

VIA c7-D 1.5Ghz
80GB HDD
1x 512MB DDR2
Pro Linux Ubuntu

Also for your drivers:

Well, I want a laptop, because of space constraints and I want to be able
to take it to school and be able to work in the quieter study areas
(instead of the main classroom with the technician pacing around and
people asking each other stupid questions about the software. )

And well, I never upgrade my computer that much, I only use my computer
for the basics. I've always thought throwing a lot of money at a computer
very stupid, when you can get a fully functional console system with
better games and not having to worry about software glitches or
the constant hardware resource arm race for the game you want to
play and only play for 4 days anyways.

Might I reccomend a netbook then?

Most of them can have screen sizes 8.9" to 10.2" screens displaying 32-bit color at 1024x600 (or you can SQUEEZE 1024x786, but it looks stretched)

Are you looking for durability, speed and battery life? or do you want more Disk space?

Well, Netbooks are way too small. The keyboard is small and cramped and the LCD is
way too small. Not only that, a lot of them run varients of linux or they run Windows
XP piss poor (Which I think is pathetic)

The only hardware things I worry about is memory, and CPU. I always make sure I have more than enough memory and CPU speed for my OS.

Hard disk space and video isnt really important. As for battery life, I really dont care, since I'll probably have the thing plugged into its' power bar for most of the time i'm using it.

You might look at 12" netbooks then, they have *usually* close to full sized keyboard (95% and up), have 1GB ram (upgradable to 2GB) and usually have Intel Atoms. However these are the most expensive netbooks out there. ($600 and up, while 10" are about 300-400, 9" are under 350)

Do you want a SSD or a HDD? With SSD you get faster read/write performance, shock proof, and better battery, but less space. With HDDs (160GB Zif-type Connection), you get more disk space but less battery, speed, and durability, and noise.

Well, my computer budget is $700 minimum, $1200 maximum.

As for SSD, Id get that since I'm indifferent to hard drive space.

umm Intel Atom, I've herd they are very SLOOOOOOW. And hardware on laptops tend to be SLOOOOOW. So Id just use AMD because even at slow CPU and bus speeds they are a little bit faster.

And umm, well, also I need ports too. Id probably want a mouse, since those little
touchy pad thingy or erasor thingy piss me off. Id probably have the mouse taking
up a USB port a lot, so Id want a extra one to plug my thumb drive in to back up files.

Atoms are easily overclocked to 1.8Ghz plus they have Hyperthreading which is like emulated dual core.

Well, hyper threading has been around since the Pentium 4 days... Every CPU has it now. I dont think Id wanna over clock a CPU on a laptop... Just asking for problems there, since there's not much you can do to cool the thing.

In fact, I wish I could figure out how to underclock my CPU. For most of the things I do my computer is almost consistently always idle. Then again, that's what speed stepping is for... and I think most mobile CPU's have that feature.

Asus' netbooks have SHE Super Hybrid Engine which, with the touch of a button you can underclock to 1.2Ghz or overclock to 1.8Ghz... or stay at the 1.6Ghz standard.

Well what's the point in that? under clocking it to 1.2 ghz doesn't help heat issues much. or over clocking it... it only marginally makes it faster with too much heat. Overclocking is over rated if you ask me.
