Actually, Newegg is pretty nice, I use them for parts all the time as well. Their problem is too many of their systems are Windows and they have a very very narrow selection of linux stuff. But, then again, I use them primarily for parts anyway, and most linux users custom build their stuff I guess. Laptops are tough to do that with though, and there are a few companies that sell laptops with linux pre-installed. Not just for the netbooks either for which a linux distro is increasingly popular as standard.

Anyway, most everywhere actually sells computers with XP. For a while this was not the case, then companies found they were loosing money like crazy because many people refused to buy Vista computers, particularly companies and IT departments, so they worked out providing XP and now they also work out selling you Vista with optional downgrade capabilities to XP.

Someone had something mixed up though. XP is a somewhat nifty feature/ graphics upgrade from 2000. Vista is actually rather different in alot of ways (though obviously everything is still based in previous). 7, from what I hear, is essentially a decent service pack for Vista, but they are making it something different simply because no one wants to buy Vista so they want to get away from the name. I hear 7 still, after a while, has the same problems. Keep in mind though, from what I've heard and seen, most of the big complaints for Vista have to do with IT stuff and implementation on corporate/business levels.

Still, even for home users, it screws a lot up all the time, but thats just the Microsoft way. Ah, I remember the days of windows using. Every once in a while someone in my family, or sometimes I just didn't pay enough attention, would get the latest sound driver upgrade from Windows updates, and of course the sound would go down. The fix was easy, of course, just roll it back to the earlier driver which worked perfectly or see if the sound cards company happens to have an actual driver update to get.
